Our History

The 1943 Indiana General Assembly made it possible by law for children to be released from public school for two hours of religious instruction each week. Classes cannot be conducted on public school property, and a parent's written consent is required in order for a child to be enrolled in religious education classes.

In 2024, Indiana amended this law (IC 20-33-2-19) and changed from a "may participate" to a "shall participate" state! Now, school administrators are obliged to allow their students to participate in our program with parental approval.

Anderson Weekday Reglious Education (AWRE) started in 1944 and was reorganized in 1974. The program is guided by a board of directors who represent local churches.

In 2026, AWRE began doing business as Awaken. We exist to partner with families and communities to awaken faith, character, and purpose in students through impactful school-release programs. Awaken|Life (Elementary School) introduces children to God's love through engaging stories, relationships, and foundational faith experiences. Awaken|Path (Middle School) guides students as they explore faith, values, and choices during a critical season of growth. Awaken|Next (High School) equips students to own their faith and live it out with confidence as they prepare for life beyond high school.
